Seasons at Glencoldon Cottage. Experience the changing landscape of the Cairngorms — from golden autumns to snowy winters.

Glencoldon changes beautifully through the year — but it’s cosy autumn and winter stays that truly bring out the magic in the Cairngorms. With snow-capped views of the hills, a woodland garden filled with wildlife, and the warm glow of a fire waiting inside, these quieter seasons offer peace, beauty, and space to slow down.

As the leaves turn amber and the hills take on a softer tone, autumn transforms the Cairngorms into a photographer’s dream. You’ll hear the sound of rutting deer in the distance, watch red squirrels busy in the trees, and enjoy peaceful walks with barely another soul around.

After days outdoors, come home to a warm, well-equipped cottage — the perfect place to read, write, or simply unwind.

Red squirrels, deer, and migrating birds are all active in autumn.

Check out our wonderful wildlife page here.

In winter, Glencoldon feels still and quietly spectacular. The Cairngorms often wear a dusting of snow, visible from the cottage windows and garden. Frost sparkles on the ground, and many of the garden’s birds become more visible, more interested in bird feeders and the various berry bushes and trees we’ve encouraged.

You might even spot footprints in the snow from deer, pine martens, or other hidden visitors

Inside, it’s just as magical. The cottage is highly insulated, with full central heating, soft throws, thick curtains, and a fire to sit beside as dusk settles in early. Stargazing here is stunning on clear nights — and there’s a kind of stillness that’s hard to find anywhere else.

As the year turns, spring brings fresh green growth, longer days, and birdsong in the garden. In summer, Glencoldon is bright and open — perfect for long walks, light evenings, and meals outside.

We’ll be adding more seasonal ideas and tips here soon.

Autumn and winter are less busy but no less beautiful — in fact, for many guests, they’re the most memorable times of year. If you’re looking for peace, space, and natural beauty, we’d love to welcome you in the quieter months.
